POST15: Tumharae anjumen se uth ke deewanae kaha jate
तुम्हारी अंजुमन से उठ के दीवाने कहाँ जाते
This is a ghazal sung by Chitra Singh, with music directed by Jagjit Singh. Both of them, a singing couple, do not need any introduction, especially to those, with even a moderate interest in ghazals. Jagjit Singh was born as Jagmohan Singh Dhiman but preferred to sing under the name Jagjit Singh. He died on 10th October 2011, at the age of just 70. Chitra Singh was married to Jagjit Singh. She is 75 years old but has practically retired from singing. The two of them can be credited with making ghazals popular among the masses.
This ghazal has been written by Pakistani ghazal writer Quateel Shifai . His name was Muhammad Aurangzeb and Quateel is his pen name ‘takhallus’. Shifai incidentally was the name of his teacher and guide. Quateel is a rather unusual ‘takhallus’ which means one who has been already killed! He was honoured in 1994 with ‘Pride of Performance’. He expired in 2001 at the age of 82. He was very active in Pakistani film industry.

जीत ले जाए कोई मुझ को नसीबों वाला
ज़िंदगी ने मुझे दाँव पे लगा रक्खा है
मैं अपने दिल से निकालूँ ख़याल किस किस का
जो तू नहीं तो कोई और याद आए मुझे
अपनी ज़बाँ तो बंद है, तुम ख़ुद ही सोच लो
पड़ता नहीं है यूँही सितम-गर किसी का नाम
चलो अच्छा हुआ काम आ गई दीवानगी अपनी
वगरना हम ज़माने भर को समझाने कहाँ जाते
अच्छा यक़ीं नहीं है तो कश्ती डुबा के देख
इक तू ही नाख़ुदा नहीं ज़ालिम, ख़ुदा भी है
दिल पे आए हुए इल्ज़ाम से पहचानते हैं
लोग अब मुझ को तिरे नाम से पहचानते हैं
दुश्मनी मुझ से किए जा मगर अपना बन कर
जान ले ले मिरी सय्याद मगर प्यार के साथ
गुनगुनाती हुई आती हैं फ़लक से बूँदें
कोई बदली तिरी पाज़ेब से टकराई है
अब जिस के जी में आए वही पाए रौशनी
हम ने तो दिल जला के सर-ए-आम रख दिया

जो वाबस्ता हुए तुम से वो अफ़्साने कहाँ जाते
Leaving your party, your mehfil,
where could have gone, your demented admirers?
What would have happened to all the tales,
episodes, related to you, involving you.
निकल कर दैर-ओ-काबा से अगर मिलता न मय-ख़ाना
तो ठुकराए हुए इंसाँ ख़ुदा जाने कहाँ जाते
Those turned out of Kaba, if had not found the wine shop,
God only knows where these people would have gone
तुम्हारी बे-रुख़ी ने लाज रख ली बादा-ख़ाने की
तुम आँखों से पिला देते तो पैमाने कहाँ जाते
Your indifference, your callous attitude,
has saved the reputation of the tavern!
If you had used your eyes to intoxicate ,
where goblets, measuring jars ,could have gone?
चलो अच्छा हुआ काम आ गई दीवानगी अपनी
वगर्ना हम ज़माने भर को समझाने कहाँ जाते
So good my erratic behaviour, my madness,
has, once served some purpose!
Otherwise how could I have explained,
my behaviour, to this whole wide World!
'क़तील' अपना मुक़द्दर ग़म से बेगाना अगर होता
तो फिर अपने पराए हम से पहचाने कहाँ जाते
Quateel, if my luck ,fortune, had been unaware of pain and shame,
How could I have distinguished my own from others?
तुम्हारी अंजुमन से उठ के दीवाने कहाँ जाते
जो वाबस्ता हुए तुम से वो अफ़्साने कहाँ जाते
