Master Madan: Child Prodigy

This Ghazal has lyrics by Saagar Nizzaami and has been set to music by Pandit Amarnath.

Master Madan recorded eight songs only, two of which are ghazals while remaining six are bhajans. He sang extensively on AIR and had many stage performances but unfortunately recordings of only eight of them are available. It is a common belief that Master Madan was poisoned by rival families as with his tonal qualities, voice, pronunciation and grasp of the language , he was sure to become a great singer. He died of Mercury poisoning.

Here we go!!

The world of faith and faithfuls

is watching me in awe and wonder,

what have you made me become in your love!

I have missed every milestone and destination in life,

solely because of your looking back at me repeatedly

while, turning and walking away from me.

The pleasure of self has made,

enjoyment of the waves my occupation,

now I neither remember Him,

nor do I apologise for my Godlessness

On this night of meeting of lovers,

she is the bearer of the jug of wine,

Oh my God, if someone could look at my good fortune.

(Sagar is also the तखल्लुस, pen name,of the poet and the tradition is that in the last couplet name of the poet is introduced. However in this couplet it fits in so very well.)

I can not stop myself from presenting the other available ghazal sung by Master Madan.

Don’t make me need you, miss you yearn for you so much

Oh my love come, please come,

(Unfortunately there is nothing equivalent to the word तरस in English. तरस खाना means taking pity but तरसना means missing something and yearning for it although it is only slightly beyond your grasp. तरसाइये has this connotation of wanting, yearning for the beloved although she can’t be forced to come although there is a promise of her coming in the atmosphere.)

Oh my love please take a misstep intentionally get hit and fall in my arms!

My world, my life my whole being is in need of you,

Please leave your world and come over.

This beautiful breeze, this cask of wine, this mild moonlight,.

I feel like ending my life here only.

The lyrics again are by Mr. Saagar Nizzaami who uses the pen name, तखल्लुस , ‘Sagar’ and weaves it in the ghazal seamlessly. It has again been set to music by Pandit Amarnath.

See you next Saturday with a rather new ghazal from the film Bazaar “बाज़ार”. Oops not new, the film was released in 1982! But feels so fresh. This ghazal from film Baazaar, will be in response to a request from one of the followers of this blog, Dr. Mrs. Kanika Verma.
