Ansa Prabhat Dayal

This 12th July is my 78th birthday and also this is the 100th blog and my intended journey has come to an end. At least for quite some time I would not be publishing blogs except that in my list of blogs ,POST 19 has been missing and I will publish a new one and number it 19. Also POST 61: Ab ke hum bichde to…… has again appeared at POST 73. Obviously POST 73 would be deleted and another blog will be published afresh. I propose to do both these actions in this month and then devote my time and energy in publishing these in the form of a book, which will contain all the gazals , my translations and all the videos of singers.

Of course if I come across a really good gazal I would translate it and send it across.

This is the most opportune moment in this literary journey of two years, to express my thanks, gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to these four who helped me in my endeavour. First on the list for encouraging me, making suggestion in the draft, correction of mistakes as also for contributing by singing and recording my favourite gazals, is my wife Ansa. Second is Charu, wife of my cousin Atul, who deserves special thanks for going through my drafts with a fine comb, making corrections in spellings and punctuations but more than any thing else for suggestions in reframing of sentences so as to make these as close to the thought and concept of the poet, as possible. Charu was a professor of English at University of Rajasthan and retired in October 2022.Third is my son Prashant, again who has been a source of great support and a great resource in finding lost drafts, searching bio-data of poets and singers and arranging the blog in the form you finally get! Arrangement of all these photos has been his forte. Fourth is Prashali who was the second line of defence! She took up the mantle of my creative resource, whenever Prashant was away to Bangalore where he is stationed presently. Can not thank Ansa, Charu, Prashant and Prashali enough.

It was a great learning experience!

Finally I would like to express my gratitude to my friends ,followers of the blog and others who have been offering suggestions for selection of gazals, making observations, offering comments and encouragement. Thank you!

Here Ansa my wife is singing this favourite gazal in her soft, sweet and soulful voice, under the direction of Guru Jatin Kumar Dey, who has composed the music. Thank you Ansa!

This gazal was penned by Mr. Sudarshan Kamra (born 1934- died 19.02. 2008) who had a pen name — takhallus, ‘Faakir’. He was part of the fast diminishing tribe of Hindu gazal writers. He was the lyrist for the iconic Jagjit Singh rendering: Woh kagaz ki kashti- who barish ka pani…’ in 1982.He was very active in Bollywood as a lyrist and dialogue writer. He was a favourite of Begum Akhtar who ,in her last days sang 5 of his gazals.

Some of his more popular sher:

Important words:

बे-ज़बानी : silence, ज़ुबाँ: language, expression; राज़-ए-उल्फ़त : secret of love; अयाँ: reveal,expose; तमन्ना: desire; जफ़ाऔ: plural of जफ़ा; tyranny, harshness, high handedness; दास्तां: story, episode;

My silence may not become a way of expression itself!

My secret of being in love may not become common knowledge, obvious !!

Oh please do not look at me in this endearing fashion!

Else it may rekindle my desires

I have started to enjoy your highhandedness, tyranny!

What if she becomes kind and friendly?

Her mention has cropped up in my interactions, conversations!

May it not become a tale or story!!

O Faakir, silence is the language of love!

Let not my silence become a reason of pride for her !!

8th was the 14th birthday of my granddaughter Prashali- daughter of Prashant and Dipali- and hence the name Prashali! It was a heart warming sight to see more than 15 teenagers — her class fellows, enjoy ice-skating and gorge themselves on all the junk!!

Take care
