Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali and Ibn-E-Insha

This is the story, where a single ghazal has made the shayar famous. This ghazal was written by Sher Muhammad Khan, who wrote under the takallus ‘INSHA’. Also as ibn e I nsha, which means son of Insha. The Christ. He lived a short life, having born in 1927 and expiring in 1978, of cancer in UK.

IMPORTANT WORDS:रस्म-ए-बंदगी : tradition of devotion; आशुफ़्तगी uneasiness, distress; उफ़्तादगी: helplessness, misery; हुस्न-ए-बे-परवा carefree beauty; अल्ताफ़ favour; इकराम : Honour ;-दरेग़ बे-अमाँ फ़ुग़ाँ clamour, cry of lamentation,cry of a broken heart;

Yesterday was the fourteenth day of rising moon!

The whole night, people were talking, discussing about you.

Some observed that it was the moon.

While others claimed it was your countenance.

Even I was present there.

People kept on asking me,

I just laughed it off,

kept silent.

To me, your desire to be behind the scene,

was acceptable to me.

In this city of yours, whom can I meet?

I have been compelled to forsake parties!

At any party, every one of them ,talks of you and you only!

Each one is an admirer of yours!

I would disown your locality, abandon it,

Become a recluse, but alas!

The Jungles belong to you, mountains belong to you, colonies are yours and villages belong to you!!

I and my sense of devotion, my uneasiness and my distress,

These are all your gifts, your favours,

O heartless, feeling-less, carefree beauty!

Two tears unknowingly have appeared and stayed in my lashes!

A showering of favours, a stream of honour from you

O you the rash one jumping into things without a way out,

Have I ever cried in pain, lamented or wailed?

To me your frenzy was justified,

To me your terms of agreement were fair.

Why this strictness of attitude towards me?

I am just a beggar on the way.

Have I blocked your way?

Have I ever touched your trailing clothes?

Yes,yes I agree you have a beautiful face.

But then things are not that simple!

It is the couplets of a person,

That have made you so famous !

O heartless come with me

if you want to listen to a good ghazal,

That lover of yours, that abandoned lover of yours,

That teller of a good ghazal, that ‘insha’ of yours.

The same ghazal has also been rendered by famous Ghulam Ali.

Enjoy the weekend with these two masterpieces.

To add pleasure to the weekend, let me introduce the same ghazal sung by

Abida Parveen.
