Begum Akhtar, Jigar Moradabadi and Jagjit Singh

This ghazal was written by Ali Sikandar, under his nom de plume, Jigar Moradabadi. He was a very well decorated Indian poet. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry collection ‘Ateish -e-Gul’ , in1958. He was also awarded D. Litt. by the Aligarh Muslim University. He died in 1960, at the age of 70.

I am also including here, some of the more popular shers of Jigar Moradabadi .

Now for the featured Ghazal for this week…

This ghazal was sung by Jagjit Singh, long back. Somehow the video got corrupted and the ghazal has been retrieved, digitally restored and remastered. That is technology for you! Fans of Jagjit Singh will be able to notice that the restoration is a good attempt but the beauty of his singing can not be matched!

Let someone go from garden to garden and proclaim!

There are thousands and thousands of problems for the single nest.

Flowers are in bloom in every garden,

But each flower has its own peculiar character, fate,

Today I do not know what is the mystery?

It is the night of separation but still it is so well illuminated!

Even thorns have some rights,

who is to save ones character, fate?

The guide showing the right path is an expert,

While the highway man is a killer !

The heart is such a friend and also such an enemy!!

Lives have been spent, centuries have gone by,

Still love is in its infancy!

Love is not a game!

Love is fragile like glass but strong like steel!!

Oh God, please take care of temperament of beauty!

My heart is anxious and beating with increased pulse!!

Please come, as without you, since yesterday,

My soul is like a copse and my body is like a grave!

Oh beautiful one , you the slayer of love!

May be I am confused as my hem is red with blood

Oh God, Oh God, look at the bright flash of calamities!

The branch is swinging ,on which is the nest!!

By straightening your tresses,

You have increased the tangles of my fondness.

It would be a mercy,

on one demanding a rebellion,

Purity of hem, will be jealous ,envious.

I have attended all gatherings, meetings,

but once I get up ,I leave behind all that transpired there.

The World is a transient moving shadow,

whose desert, wilderness and which garden?

This ghazal has been sung by Begum Akhtar as well in her trademark style, giving it a special poignance. Still the ghazal has a happy feel to it and that is the reason for selecting this ghazal for the New Year.

This blog is being loaded on a Friday, as it is the First of January, with the sincere hope that the New Year will bring health, happiness, joy, cheer, merriment, prosperity and welcome relief from the miseries, gloom and grief of 2020!

HAPPY NEW YEAR !
