POST 36: Suna hai log use aankh bhar ke dekhtae hain
सुना है लोग उसे आँख भर के देखते है .
This ghazal is penned by late Ahmad Faraz, a Pakistani shayar. Ahmad Faraz was a poet, scriptwriter and Chairman of the Pakistan Academy of letters. He was very loud in his criticism of the military rule and was removed from all positions in institutions . The ghazal is rather long but beautifully crafted.

ये सोच कर तेरी महफ़िल में चला आया हूँ फ़राज़
तेरी सोहबत में रहूँगा तो संवर जाऊंगा
हमारे सब्र की इंतहां क्या पूछते हो “फ़राज़”
वो हम से लिपट के रो रहे थे किसी और के लिए!
हमारे बाद नहीं आएगा तुम्हे चाहत का ऐसा मज़ा फ़राज़
तुम लोगों से खुद कहते फिरोगे की मुझे चाहो तो उसकी तरह!
कसूर नहीं इसमें कुछ भी उनका फ़राज़
हमारी चाहत ही इतनी थी की उन्हें गुरूर आ गया
हमने चाहा था इक ऐसे शख्स को “फराज”
जो आइने से भी नाजुक था, मगर था पत्थर का
हम ने सुना था की दोस्त वफ़ा करते हैं फ़राज़
जब हम ने किया भरोसा तो रिवायत ही बदल गई
हज़ूम-ए-गम मेरी फितरत बदल नहीं सकती “फराज़”,
मैं क्या करूं मुझे आदत है मुसकुराने की
वो ज़हर देता तो दुनीया की नज़रों में आ जाता “फराज़”
सो उसने यूँ किया के वक़्त पे दवा न दी
हजूम ए दोस्तों से जब कभी फुर्सत मिले
अगर समझो मुनासिब तो हमें भी याद कर लेना
सौ बार मरना चाहा निगाहों में डूब कर ‘फ़राज़’
वो निगाह झुका लेते हैं हमें मरने नहीं देते
Ghulam Ali, the all time favourite has sung this ghazal in his inimitable style. The ghazal has very simple words and expresses the emotions of a lover in a heartfelt manner.

सुना है लोग उसे आँख भर के देखते हैं
सो उस के शहर में कुछ दिन ठहर के देखते हैं
सुना है रब्त है उस को ख़राब-हालों से
सो अपने आप को बरबाद कर के देखते हैं
I hear that people stop and look at her and keep looking!
So let me stay on in her city and see what happens!!
I hear that she has a soft corner ,special bond for people who are in a bad shape! So let me destroy ,ruin myself!!
सुना है दर्द की गाहक है चश्म-ए-नाज़ उस की
सो हम भी उस की गली से गुज़र के देखते हैं
I hear she is a customer of pain, has a soft corner for people in pain,
So let me pass through her locality to see what happens?
सुना है उस को भी है शेर ओ शाइरी से शग़फ़
सो हम भी मो'जिज़े अपने हुनर के देखते हैं ,
I hear she has a fondness, ardour, passion, fervour for poetry,
So let me see what wonders ,miracles my skill will cause to happen!
सुना है बोले तो बातों से फूल झड़ते हैं
ये बात है तो चलो बात कर के देखते हैं
I hear that when she talks, she causes flowers to shower!
If so, let us start a conversation, making her talk.
सुना है रात उसे चाँद तकता रहता है
सितारे बाम-ए-फ़लक से उतर के देखते हैं
I hear that the moon stares at her, the whole night!
And stars descend from the roof of the skies to look at her!!
सुना है दिन को उसे तितलियाँ सताती हैं
सुना है रात को जुगनू ठहर के देखते हैं
I hear that butterflies bother her during the day!
And at night, fireflies stop to look at her!!
सुना है हश्र हैं उस की ग़ज़ाल सी आँखें
सुना है उस को हिरन दश्त भर के देखते हैं
I hear her eyes that resemble the eyes of a doe, bring about the doomsday!
Even antelopes stop and look at her!!
सुना है रात से बढ़ कर हैं काकुलें उस की
सुना है शाम को साए गुज़र के देखते हैं
I understand that her tresses are darker than the night!
Even shadows in the evening pass through her tresses to make sure!!
सुना है उस की सियह-चश्मगी क़यामत है
सो उस को सुरमा-फ़रोश आह भर के देखते हैं
I understand that her dark eyes cause apocalypse!
So sellers of kohl look at her with a long sigh!!
सुना है उस के लबों से गुलाब जलते हैं
सो हम बहार पे इल्ज़ाम धर के देखते हैं
I hear that even roses are jealous of the redness of her lips!
So let me blame ,accuse the season of bloom, the spring!!
सुना है आइना तिमसाल है जबीं उस की
जो सादा दिल हैं उसे बन-सँवर के देखते हैं
I understand that her forehead shines like a mirror!
So light hearted make themselves up even to look at her!!
सुना है जब से हमाइल हैं उस की गर्दन में
मिज़ाज और ही लाल ओ गुहर के देखते हैं
I understand that even precious stones like pearls or gems,
when hanging from her neck, develop a different temperament !!
सुना है चश्म-ए-तसव्वुर से दश्त-ए-इम्काँ में
पलंग ज़ाविए उस की कमर के देखते हैं
I hear that in a forest of possibilities the eye of imagination, looks at the angles in her waist!
सुना है उस के बदन की तराश ऐसी है
कि फूल अपनी क़बाएँ कतर के देखते हैं
I understand that the shape of her body is such!
Even flowers snip off their apparel, to look at her!!
वो सर्व-क़द है मगर बे-गुल-ए-मुराद नहीं
कि उस शजर पे शगूफ़े समर के देखते हैं
She is tall and graceful ,but not lacking the flowers of fulfillment of wishes!
We see coming of buds and fruits on that tree!!
बस इक निगाह से लुटता है क़ाफ़िला दिल का
सो रह-रवान-ए-तमन्ना भी डर के देखते हैं
Even one look from her is enough to loot the caravan of my heart!
So even fellow travellers of desire are afraid to look at her or meet her eye!!
सुना है उस के शबिस्ताँ से मुत्तसिल है बहिश्त
मकीं उधर के भी जल्वे इधर के देखते हैं
I understand that the heavens are in proximity of her bed chamber!
Even residents of the heavens keep looking at the splendour of this side!!
रुके तो गर्दिशें उस का तवाफ़ करती हैं
चले तो उस को ज़माने ठहर के देखते हैं
If she stops, fortunes move around her,
And when she walks, ages stop to look at her!
किसे नसीब कि बे-पैरहन उसे देखे
कभी कभी दर ओ दीवार घर के देखते हैं
Who is so lucky as to see her without clothes,
Rarely ,even the walls or doors of the house see her so!
कहानियाँ ही सही सब मुबालग़े ही सही
अगर वो ख़्वाब है ताबीर कर के देखते हैं
May be all these are stories or exaggerations!
If she is a dream, let me interpret this dream!!
अब उस के शहर में ठहरें कि कूच कर जाएँ
'फ़राज़' आओ सितारे सफ़र के देखते हैं
To stay in her city or make a departure?

I have tried to introduce another dimension to the enjoyment of listening to ghazals. Here Fawad Khan , a Pakistani cine artist has narrated the ghazal in prose. Fawad Khan is known to Indian film watchers . He was cast as the hero, opposite Sonam Kapoor, in the movie Khoobsurat. I am sure his narration of the ghazal would be a unique experience.
