Maiñ ise shohrat kahūñ yā apnī rusvāī kahūñ
mujh se pahle us galī meñ mere afsāne ga

Khatir Ghazanvi at his best!

Here he is rendering the ghazal in his own voice.

Khatir Ghaznavi

This ghazal has been written by Mohammed Ibrahim Baig, popularly known by his pen name Khatir Ghaznavi, a Pakistani poet. He was born in 1925 (05.11.1925) and lived up to be 83 (07.07.2008). He was proficient in Pashto, Urdu , Hindi. He also learnt Malay, Chinese, Russian . He worked as Director of a research foundation known as Pakistan Academy of letters. He was a keen photographer also.

This is a realistic ghazal, as the first verse suggests but then it is a lament of a lover also. Almost all Urdu poetry is the story of the besotted lover and unresponsive beloved, who at times is cruel or at most times indifferent!

Ustad Mehdi Hassan has sung this ghzal like a true ustad , that he was. One can feel his involvement with the ghazal and the hurt that surfaces unbidden!

Important Words:

गर्मी-ए-महफिल : warmth, gaiety of the assembly;नारा-ए-मस्ताना: intoxicated slogan;शोहरत : fame, renown, ;रूसवाई:defamed; अफ़साने:affairs; वहशतें:madness, desire to be away from mankind; मुक़द्दर:destiny; रग-ए-जाँ: Jugular vein showing life; जे़हन:memory;बारहा:repeatedly, frequently; गुलज़ारों:garden; कुश्ता-ए-शब: fit to be slaughtered in the night; गर्दाने: adjudged, acknowledged;

Although for a very insignificant issue, friendship of several years was lost!

Still the saving grace is that some people ( the loved one) got exposed!!

Warmth and festivity of the assembly is just a hyped up slogan!

and she is happy that those who made the assembly lively have left!!

What should I call it? My fame , popularity or dishonour, infamy?

Even before I reached her neighbourhood, stories of my romances were known there!

My desire to be away from mankind, my unsocial behaviour became my destiny!

Where ever I reached loneliness and aloofness reached along with me!!

She was so close to me as though she was like my jugular vein.

But I could not recognise her as my eyes were clouded with tears!

Even now scents of her memories are safe in my heart.

I repeatedly tried to make the gardens fragrant with those saved scents!!

Oh Khatir, what a destiny! I was fit to be slaughtered at night !!

Even next morning I was adjudged the culprit!

Farida Khanum, a very popular ghazal singer both in India and Pakistan has sung this ghazal, giving her all! We have been hearing her youthful voice since very early years so do not realise that she was born in 1929 and is now 92 years old! Since 2015 she has not been singing. She is identified universally with the ghazal “ aaj jane ki zid no karo……”

The same ghazal has been sung by Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. He was born in 1922 and died rather young in 1974. He belonged to the Patiala Gharana. This is another dimension of ghazal singing.

Ustad Amanat Ali Khan

Dr. Roshan Bharti is a singer from Rajasthan and belongs to the ‘Seniya gharana’. This gharana traces its lineage to Mian Tansen! Also known as the ‘Kalavant Gharana’. He is the grandson of Ustad Jammal Khan. Ustad Jammal Khan was the guru of Jagjit singh.Rizvi is a trained ghazal singer and has obtained Ph.D. wherein his thesis titled “ Beghum Akhtar’s life and works”. He has also paired with Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh and Abida Parveen.

Raj Kumar Rizvi is associated with the raga-based classical ghazal gayaki in the country although there are now ,very few practitioners of this form of singing. He is greatly influenced by the ghazal singing style of Ustad Mehdi Hasan, his guru and relative.

Dear friends do not let small things impact you. To be happy, learn to ignore Only do things that bring you happiness ,like reading my blog and enjoying good ghazals!

Have a grand weekend!

First of May!
