उम्र जल्वों में बसर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
Oh, what a realistic ghazal that a lot of us can relate to at so many levels! Written by Khamosh Ghazipuri. It explains the realities of life in very simple words. It is a commentary especially for those who have a false sense of self importance! His given name was Muzzafar Husain. He was born on 20.07 1932 ,in a small district town of east UP. He was very active in mushairas. He passed the exams of Adib e Mahir and Adib e Kamil in 1953 a nd started teaching Urdu. His initial guide was Abdul Gauss GHazipuri and then Sarosh Machlishahari.
Jagjit Singh sings this ghazal in his velvety voice with a strange combination of feeling, reality and pain. Does he need an introduction? Noooooo of course not! Still I would like to mention an interesting fact about his marriage to Chitra Singh. JS had fallen madly in love with CS and proposed to her although she was already married to Mr. Debo Prasad Datta and had a daughter Monica! CS did not agree, so JS went to her husband and explained that he wanted to marry his wife!! Eventually they tied the knot in 1969!!!

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, has sung the same ghazal in his own style although not in his normal imitable style which we all have come to know and love. It is still a lovely rendition and of course expertly done with every note in it’s exact place.
उम्र जल्वों में बसर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
हर शब-ए-ग़म की सहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
It is not as though the entire life would be spent in celebrations or splendour!
It is not true that pain of the night would end once the dawn comes. The sadness may still continue!
चश्म-ए-साक़ी से पियो या लब-ए-साग़र से पियो
बे-ख़ुदी आठों पहर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
What ever be the manner of consuming wine, whether from the eyes of the lady serving wine or from the jug, intoxication can not last day and night .
नींद तो दर्द के बिस्तर पे भी आ सकती है
उन की आग़ोश में सर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
One would be engulfed in sleep even in the bed of pain!
It is not necessary that the head has to rest in her lap.
( What beautiful commentary on the aloofness of the beloved!)
शैख़ करता तो है मस्जिद में ख़ुदा को सज्दे
उस के सज्दों में असर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
The preacher offers obeisance to the God in the mosque.
Still what is the surety that his prayers will be effective?
सब की नज़रों में हो साक़ी ये ज़रूरी है मगर
सब पे साक़ी की नज़र हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
It is necessary that the lady serving wine is in view of everyone!
How is it possible that she would have a soft corner for everyone?
मय-कशी के लिए ख़ामोश भरी महफ़िल में
सिर्फ़ ख़य्याम का घर हो ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
O Khamosh, in this huge assembly of heavy drinking ,
Why only the house of Khayyam should be selected, demanded?
A sher , though not in the original ghazal but in the same genre!
ये तो नहीं कि हम काबिल नहीं एक क़तरा के भी
इश्क़ की बरसात में तर — बतर हों ये ज़रूरी तो नहीं
It is not as though I am not worthy of even a droplet!
Still it is not possible that I may be drenched in showers of love!!
