This gazal had been written by famous Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, on 29th January 1954, while he was in Montgomery Prison in Rawalpindi. He, along with several military officers, was imprisoned in 1951, in the infamous Rawalpindi case , under Pakistan Safety Order Act, for conspiring to overthrow government of Liaquat Ali Khan, first Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was released in 1955.
Faiz Ahmed Faiz was a controversial poet all his life with strong left leanings. His complete poetry has been published as ‘ Nuskhahee Wafa’. He was active in journalism as the editor of some magazines and the daily newspaper ‘Pakistan Times' . He received Masters degree in English and Arabic.
Faiz is a man’s name meaning victorious, successful, plentiful.
Here are a few of his more meaningful shers.
- Here is Mehdi Hassan at his own wizardry!

The flowers are in bloom, in multitude of colours, a gentle breeze of early spring is blowing.
Please come so that the business of the gardens, festivities may start!
My dear, the cage is sad! Please urge something of the breeze,
For God sake, let somebody talk something somewhere about the beloved!!
Let some morning begin with the proximity of your lips!
Let the breeze start from your fragrant tresses, full of sweet smells!!
The relationship is grand with its intimacy with pain but my heart is destitute!
Shall come in your name and sympathize and share the grief and pain.
Whatever transpired , whatever became of me, on the night of separation, well it happened!
Still my tears have ameliorated your destiny!
It was in the presence of the beloved that in a frenzy, I had a strong urge for misery and lot of misery!
You secured me in a strong grip as though from my throat and rendered me helpless!!
At the destination or on the way, I found no one up to the mark!
As I left the neighbourhood of the beloved, I could only proceed towards death by hanging!

I have started to feel that these blogs will end by my 76th birthday on 12th July,2021, one year after I started these on the urging of dear Preeti, who lives in Canada and is a keen lover of good music, having inherited the genes from her mother. It has been a labour of love and has been very satisfying. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have!
Have a pleasurable weekend!
