POST 5: Kaun Kehta Mohabbat ki zuba hoti hai
This is a very popular ghazal written by Sahir Hoshiarpuri and sung by several artists. My first choice is the version sung by Madhuparna.
This ghazal is very close to my heart as my dear wife is a great one for not speaking and expressing feelings through her beautiful eyes!
So here we gooooo…
Who says, love has a language of its own? Can this feeling be explained through verbal language?
This reality, this feeling can only be revealed through eyes only
If she(he) does not come,
There is a mixed feeling of pain, hurt, pining, scratchy feel as though my heart has been worked over by sandpaper
And this feeling increases multi fold when she comes
- I have tried to find an appropriate equivalent word for Khalish, but I must admit my inadequacy, as also probably the inadequacy of the English language. Khalish has a connotation of pain, hurt, abrasion, as though the heart is being scraped with a rough tool, causing lacerations but nothing equivalent. However, anyone who has experienced khalish would know what am I talking about!
That which exhilarates the spirit,
That which makes the heart glow in its own light,in its own pleasure
Every spectacle does not have that capacity to illuminate.
How long can I control the flood of love
What is in my heart gets expressed through my eyes.
The version sung by Chitra Singh and Jagjit Singh has one more stanza.
Life has become a smouldering festering pyre “Sahir”
Neither it flares into a flame,
Nor it extinguishes itself in smoke.
I think Madhuparna did the sensible thing in not including this last couplet, as I feel it does not go well with the happy feel of the ghazal
I hope you enjoy the translation and then the ghazal would become more interesting. Your enjoyment is the basic idea behind this blog.
Love you all.
