This ghazal was written by the famous poet Shahid Kabir ( born 01.05.1932- died 11.05.2001). He was an Indian poet from Maharashtra who spent most of his time in Nagpur. His important works include a novel ‘ kachchi deewaran’ published in 1958, and collections of ghazals ‘ Charon aaur’ published in 1968 and another collection of ghazals called ‘Pehchaan ‘ published in 1999. He served as a member, Board of studies for Urdu language, Nagpur University from 1991 to 1995. His poems have been included in the Maharashtra State Board of Education text books of Urdu language for 12th standard.

This ghazal uses very simple words but has deep meaning and strong sense of sympathy and empathy.

Jagjit Singh and Lata Mageshkar together weave a magical spell which takes this ghazal to another level.

Both of them don’t need an introduction so I am desisting !

Important words:

ग़म: sorrow; ख़ज़ाना: treasure;अफ़साना: episode; राग़: way of doing things; मयख़ाने: Tavern;वाईज़: learned man, preacher, guide;

The shared treasure of deep sorrows, hurts, anguish,

despair belongs to both of us!

This episode, this sad affair belongs to you and me!!

We do convert this anguish into a song and make sing it too!

That is your way of doing things and so is it mine!!

How can I console you or how can you soothe or provide succour to me?

After all your heart and mine both are obsessed and haunted!

The entire town is buzzing, gossiping about the affair!

That episode is yours and equally mine!!

Oh learned wise and sacred man, my

guide, please don’t preach to me about not to visit the tavern!

I know you also frequent it and so do I !!
