POST 57: Patta Patta Boota Boota Haal Hamara Jane Hai
This is a ghazal penned by the legendary shayar ‘ Mir Taqi Mir’ in his inimitable style! It has several difficult Urdu words but once understood ,it beautifully illustrates the helplessness and misery of the lover who is not getting any response from his beloved ! Try and imagine that the society was very very conservative, opportunities for meeting young ones of the opposite sex were almost next to nil and still if an opportunity arose and the response was feeble how frustrating it could be!! Mir Muhammad Taqi Mir was born in February 1723 and lived up to 21st September 1810.His admirers called him ‘ Khuda e Sukhan’ — God of Poetry! He spent later part of his life in the court of Asaf-ud-Daulah, in Lucknow.
Ghalib once said “ Rekhta ke tum hee Ustad nahi Ghalib! Kehte hai agle zamane mein koi Mir bhi tha!!
Lata Mangeshkar sang this ghazal at the prime of her creative best, for the film ‘ Ek Nazar’ in 1972, under music direction of Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Lata Mangeshkar does not need any introduction but would like to mention that , in order to support her family, she started singing at the tender age of 13years , when her father died, and went on to be decorated with ‘Bharat Rana’- highest civilian honour in the country!

Every leaf every small plant, knows the condition of my heart!
The only one who does not is my beloved although the whole garden knows it!!
If within her choice ,she would not let the pearl in the ear ring touch her ear ring!
She considers even the Sun and moon in the sky, as the pupil of her eye!!
Before that haughty one we keep on praying Oh God, Oh God!
While the arrogant one does not even recognise the ever present God !!
There is no one as simple as the lover in this World!
He considers even the loss of heart as gain or profit!!
Taking care, giving medicines is not a ritual, a tradition in this city of the beautifuls!
Otherwise the innocent lover considers even this pain as part of treatment!!
That arrogant hunter , the one who hunts by deception!
All the birds flying free in the skies, consider themselves as prisoners!!
The brilliance of faithfulness, the pleasure of giving are unknown to her!
The only thing she knows is the swipe and sign of a whishpered ,concealed contempt!!
What all upheavals my heartless restless beloved brings with her!
Only someone madly in love can know it!!
How simple hearted is our Mir!
Bitter, blood thirsty energetic shine of the sword of the rival, he considers as palatable as pleasant water!!
Mehdi Hasan like always has put his heart in bringing out the beauty of this complicated ghazal. What a treat!
Hariharan is singing this ghazal as part of the celebrations of ‘ swar Utsav’ and really makes it a festive treat.
