This is an iconic ghazal which has become synonymous with urdu poetry. It’s rendering by the legendary singer Late Mehendi Hasan made ghazals very popular in India, especially in the younger generation of the time. Mehendi Hasan was a Pakistani singer who had his roots in the erstwhile state of Bikaner, now a district of Rajasthan state. The ghazal has a naughty feel about itself and somehow touches your heart teasingly. The gazal has lyrics by Syed Ahmed Shah Ali, better known by his pen name Ahmed Faraz. It has been set to rag Hemant Kalyan and music was composed by Nisar Rizvi.
रजिंश ही सही दिल ही दुखाने के लिये आ ,
आ फिर से मुझे छोड़ के जाने के लिये आ
Although you are annoyed and angry with me,
almost to the extent of enmity between us, still
Come, come to hurt me,
by coming and abandoning me again.
पहले से मरासिम ना सही
फिर भी कभी तो
रस्म-ओ-रह-ए-दुनिया ही निभाने के लिये आ
Of course there is no existing relationship between us ,
Still, once in a while come
Come to follow the rituals of the world,
किस किस को बतायेंगे जुदाई का सबब हम
तू मुझ से खफा है तो ज़माने के लिए आ
To whom all and how am I going to explain the cause of our separation,
Since you are annoyed with me, please come, come for sake of social appearances
कुछ तो मेरे पिंदार-ए-मुहब्बत का भरम रख
तू भी तो कभी मुझको मनाने के लिये आ
Please maintain the illusion of high prestige, reputation, status of love,
Come sometime, come to woo me, persuade me to believe that there is love between us
इक उम्र से हूँ लज़्ज़त-ए-गिरिया *, से भी महरूम
ऐ राहत-ए-जाँ मुझको रुलाने के लिये आ
Since ages, I have been deprived of the pleasure of weeping with abandon,
O giver of relief to self, come to make me weep uncontrollably.
*Lazzat e giria literally means ecstasy of weeping. At times weeping uncontrollably can be exhilarating, pleasurable and cathartic
माना के मुहब्बत का छुपाना है मुहब्बत
चुपके से किसी रोज़ जताने के लिये आ
I admit that not disclosing your love, not showing your love,
is a way to love, still come quietly, clandestinely, come some day and reveal your love
जैसे तुझे आते हैं, न आने के बहाने
ऐसे ही किसी रोज़ न जाने के लिये आ
You have innumerable excuses and unlimited reasons for not coming,
So come some day, for just not going back at all
अब तक दिल-ए-ख़ुशफ़हम को हैं तुझ से उम्मीदें
ये आख़िरी शम्में भी बुझाने के लिये आ
My heart which has so many illusions, has still hopes from you,
Please come, come to extinguish these last flashes of hope.
The same ghazal has been sung by several others but the best female rendering probably is by famous Runa Laila. Her diction is very clear and her pronunciation is also very pure. So here is the Runa Laila version, enjoy the ghazal.
