Post 67: Aaj jaane ke zid na karo
This enchanting ghazal has been written by famous poet Fayyaz Hashmi a Pakistani poet who was born in Kolkata in 1920 and lived up to 29.11.2011 (91 years). He shifted to Pakistan in 1951.Ssince1943, he worked in a British firm ‘ Gramaphone Company of India’ as a lyricist. He was transferred to Lahore in 1951 to organise the music scene there. He settled there only. During this time he promoted young artists including Farida Khanam, Zeenat Beghum, Munnawwar Sultana and many more.
At a young age of 21, in 1941,he wrote the popular song ‘ tasveer teri dil mera behla na saka ge’. Talat Mehmood sang it under the music direction of kamal Dasgupta and became an established ghazal singer with his velvety voice! Fayyaz Ahmed also wrote the non filmi song ‘ yeh raatein yeh mausam yeh hasana hasana, mujhe bhool jana inhein na bhulana’ a private song sung by Pankaj Mullick.
This ghazal is so endearing since it is so easy to relate oneself with the idea and its simplicity.
Here my daughter-in-law, Dipali, married to my son Prashant, is singing this ghazal, on the occasion of her 16th marriage anniversary, on the eleventh of February. My wife gave dipali the pet name Aali( which in Hindi means a friend -सखी) and now everyone calls her Aali!
The words used in this ghazal are so simple and easy to understand that it does not need any translation! I am feeling so superfluous!!
