अब के हम बिछड़े तो शायद कभी ख़्वाबों में मिलें
This is a gazal penned by famous Pakistani shayar Ustad Ahmed Faraz ( born 12th January 1931- died 25th August 2008), who also worked as the Chairman of the Pakistan Academy of letters. He was critical of the military rule and was displaced by the military rulers. He was arrested and put in jail during the reign of Zia ul Haq. He was posthumously awarded ‘Hilal -e- Pakistan’ , second highest civilian award in Pakistan. He was well educated having received Masters in Urdu and Persian from Peshawar University. All popular singers including Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Runa Laila and several others sang his gazals and made them popular.
अब के हम बिछड़े तो शायद कभी ख़्वाबों में मिलें
जिस तरह सूखे हुए फूल किताबों में मिलें
This time when we part, probably we would meet in dreams only!
Like dried and pressed flowers found in books!!
ढूँढ उजड़े हुए लोगों में वफ़ा के मोती
ये ख़ज़ाने तुझे मुमकिन है ख़राबों में मिलें
Try and find gems of faithfulness in people who have been uprooted ,dispossessed!
Possibly you will find these treasures in people utterly ruined!!
ग़म-ए-दुनिया भी ग़म-ए-यार में शामिल कर लो
नश्शा बढ़ता है शराबें जो शराबों में मिलें
Add the despondency of the World in the sorrow of the lover!
Intoxication of the wine gets multiplied when many wines combine!!
तू ख़ुदा है न मिरा इश्क़ फ़रिश्तों जैसा
दोनों इंसाँ हैं तो क्यूँ इतने हिजाबों में मिलें
Neither are you the God, nor is my love pure like those of the messengers of God!
Both of us are just humans, then why meet behind so many curtains?
आज हम दार पे खींचे गए जिन बातों पर
क्या अजब कल वो ज़माने को निसाबों में मिलें
Today for issues that I have been fated to execution by climbing the shaft (Suli) !
May be the World would prescribe these same things as part of duty!!( similar to duty of paying zakat on income)
अब न वो मैं न वो तू है न वो माज़ी है ‘फ़राज़’
जैसे दो शख़्स तमन्ना के सराबों में मिलें
Now neither am I the same , nor are you , neither is Faraz as he was in the past!
Like two people meet in mirage of their desires!!
I have exhausted all that needed to be told about Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh and would feel obliged if some one could provide some additional interesting information. What a phenomenal contribution in popularising gazal singing and gazal listening in the sub-continent!!

Javed Ali is a very popular singer who attained a pole position very early in life. He is also very active in Indian film industry and is a regular presence in talent hunt programmes on the TV.
Javed Hussain was born ( 1981) and brought up in Delhi. He started singing with his father himself a renowned singer Ustad Hamid Hussain. Fortunately Ghulam Ali heard him singing and felt Javed could become a great singer and started guiding him and gave him a chance to sing in his live concerts. As a tribute and to honour his ustad, Javed Hussain changed his name to Javed Ali!
Madhuparna is appearing in my blog after quite a long gap but I am very fond of her voice and love hearing her again and again. Madhuparna Vaidya belongs to the Kirana Gharana , who started singing at the tender age of 6! She was trained in gazal singing by Ustad Mohan Khan who himself was a disciple of Mehdi Hasan. She was featured as a rising star of Hindustani Classical Music , in 2009, by Pancham Nishad.
Manjari (Born 17th April 1986, in Trivandrum, Kerala) again has appeared in my blogs several times and deserves acclaim for her diverse and extensive coverage in gazal singing. she primarily sings in Tamil and Malayalam but she has achieved a presence in gazal singing , with such clear pronunciation and no regional traces. She received the prestigious ‘Sahir and Adeeb International Award’ in 2016.

22nd May is the marriage anniversary of my nephew Prateek and my daughter-in-law Parul. Ansa and I are going to Dubai to celebrate it with them. Happy anniversary!
