This is a quawwali which rocked the entire subcontinent when it was released in film ‘Barsat ki Raat’, in 1960. It featured Madhubala, Bharat Bhushan, Shyama, Chandrashekhar, K.N. Singh, P.C. Kanwal and others.
This quawwali was sung by stalwarts Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Shiv Dayal Batish and Sudha Malhotra.

न तो कारवाँ की तलाश है, न तो हमसफ़र की तलाश है
मेरे शौक-ए-ख़ाना-ख़राब को तेरी रहगुज़र की तलाश है
Neither am I looking for a caravan to join nor am I looking for a partner!
My tendency of spoiling my life myself is looking for the road that you travel!

जो दवा के नाम पे ज़हर दे उसी चारागर की तलाश है
The only treatment for my unfortunate madness, craze is death!
Looking for a doctor who may give me poison disguised as medicine!!
तेरा इश्क़ है मेरी आरज़ू, तेरा इश्क़ है मेरी आबरू दिल इश्क़, जिस्म इश्क़ है
और जान इश्क़ है ईमान की जो पूछो तो ईमान इश्क़ है
Your love is my desire, loving you is my honour, my heart, my body are love!
Even my life is love and if you ask even my religion, my faith in God is love!!
तेरा इश्क़ है मेरी आबरू तेरा इश्क़ मैं कैसे छोड़ दूँ , मेरी उम्र भर की तलाश है
जाँ-सोज की हालत को जाँ-सोज ही समझेगा
मैं शमा से कहता हूँ महफ़िल से नहीं कहता

Your love is my prestige, how can I renounce your love, it is the find of my entire life!
Only someone who has experienced a deep sigh will understand a deep sigh!
That is why I address the burning flame and not the congregation!!
सहर तक सब का है अंजाम जल कर ख़ाक हो जाना
बने महफ़िल में कोई शमा या परवाना हो जाए क्यों कि
ये इश्क़ -इश्क़ है इश्क़- इश्क़
The fate of everyone , as morning comes is to be burnt to dust!
Whether one is the flame or the moth in the congregation!!
( flame शमा denotes the loved one while the moth परवाना is the lover)
वहशत-ए-दिल रसनो दार से रोकी न गई
किसी खंजर, किसी तलवार से रोकी न गई
इश्क़ मजनूँ की वो आवाज़ है जिसके आगे
कोई लैला किसी दीवार से रोकी न गई

The passion of the heart could not be controlled even by the influential!
Neither by the knife nor the sword
The call of love from Majnu is so powerful!
That even walls could not stop Laila
वो हँस के अगर माँगे तो हम जान भी दे दें
ये जान तो क्या चीज़ है ईमान भी दे दें
क्यों कि ये इश्क़ -इश्क़ है इश्क़- इश्क़
If she entices me with a laughing face I am willing to lay down my life even!
What is life? I am prepared to give up my honour, faith!!
नाज़-ओ-अंदाज़ से कहते हैं कि जीना होगा
ज़हर भी देते हैं तो कहते हैं कि पीना होगा
जब मैं पीता हूँ तो कहते हैं कि मरता भी नहीं
जब मैं मरता हूँ तो कहते हैं कि जीना होगा
ये इश्क़ -इश्क़ है इश्क़- इश्क़
With charming gestures she says that I have to live!
She gives me poison and says that I have to drink it!
When I consume poison she complains that I do not even die!
And when I prepare to die, she says I have to live!!
मजहब-ए-इश्क़ की हर रस्म कड़ी होती है
हर कदम पर कोई दीवार ख़ड़ी होती है
इश्क़ आज़ाद है हिन्दू न मुसलमान है
इश्क़ आप ही धर्म है और आप ही ईमान है
इश्क़ जिससे आगाह नहीं शैखों ब्राम्हण दोनों
उस हक़ीक़त का गरजता हुआ ऐलान है इश्क़
राह उल्फ़त की कठिन है इसे आसां न समझ
All the rituals of religion of love are very strict!
For every step there is a wall to stop you!
Love is free, it is neither Hindu nor Muslim!
Love itself is a religion and it is an honour, faith!
Both Brahimins and the Maulvi are ignorant, unaware of love!
Love is a reality, a proclamation passing through both religions!
The path of love is difficult , don't mistake it as easy!!
बहोत कठिन है डगर पनघट की
अब क्या भर लाऊँ मैं जमुना से मटकी
मैं जो चली जल जमुना भरन को देखो सखी री
नन्द के छोरे मोहे रोके झाड़ों में
अब लाज राखो मोरे घूँघट पट की लाज राखो राखो

When I go to the Yamuna to fill the pitcher, O dear!
That son of Nand, tries to hold me in the bushes!

जान अजान का ज्ञान भुला के लोक लाज को तज के
Whenever Krishna played his flute, Radha had to come out all decked up!
Forgetting all knowledge of known and unknowns, even forgetting her modesty!!
बन-बन डोली जनक दुलारी पहन के प्रेम की माला
दर्शन जल की प्यासी मीरा, पी गई बिस का प्याला
और फिर अर्ज करी की लाज राखो राखो राखो
Janak’s daughter wandered from forest to forest wearing garland of love,
Wishing for an appearance of Krishna, Meera drank up the cup of poison!
And then requested for saving of her modesty!!
अल्लाह और रसूल का फ़र्मान इश्क़ है यानी हदीस इश्क़ है
कुरआन इश्क़ है गौतम का और मसीह का अरमान इश्क़ है
The tenets of Allah and Rasool are love, sermons of Muhammad are love!
Kuran is love and desires of Gautam and Christ are love!!
ये कायनात जिस्म है और जान इश्क़ है
इश्क़ सरमद, इश्क़ ही मंसूर है इश्क़ मंसूर ह, इश्क़ कोहे-तूर है
ख़ाक को बुत और बुत को देवता करता है इश्क़
इंतिहा ये है कि बन्दे को ख़ुदा करता है इश्क़
This entire creation, Universe is like the body but love is the spirit in it !
Love is infinite, love is one helped by God himself, love is the hill on which Moosa realised God!
Love converts dust into a statue and love converts the statue into God !
The ultimate is that the God Himself loves the mankind!!
The same quawwali has been sung by Anil Bajpai, Sanjay Sawant, Shailaja Subramanian and Sangeeta Mulkar, in the Town Hall of Bhuj, Gujrat. Enjoy the variation.
