POST 76: Tere ishq ke inteha chahta huin
तिरे इश्क़ की इंतिहा चाहता हूँ
Allama Iqbal ( born 09.11.1877- died 21.04.1938), whose given name was Muhammad Iqbal Masaudi, was a very well respected lyrist, author, statesman and a philosopher of the undivided India. His grandfather Sahaj Sapru was a Kashmiri Pandit, who had migrated to Sialkot. He was knighted in 1922 after publication of ‘Asrar-e-Khudi’ a collection of ghazals. His ‘ Tarana -e Hind’ popularly known as ‘Saarae jahan se achha hindustan hamara….’ was the theme song of all freedom fighters.
Important words: तक़दीर:fate; रज़ा: wish, desire; बे-नूरी: lack of lustre;दीदा-वर:connoisseur, one who appreciates finer things in life; सितम: torture; वादा-ए-बे-हिजाबी: promise of being shameless, immodest; Hijab means a screen, shyness so बे-हिजाबी means someone who has given up the veil, shyness; सब्र-आज़मा: test of patience; ज़ाहिदों:devotees, religious devout; लन तरानी:boasting, bragging; अहल-ए- महफ़िल: people of the congregation;

मिरी सादगी देख क्या चाहता हूँ

Look at my simplicity, what little do I want?
सितम हो कि हो वादा-ए-बे-हिजाबी
कोई बात सब्र-आज़मा चाहता हूँ
Whether it is torture or a promise/oath of shamelessness; immodesty!
I only want to a test of my patience!!
ये जन्नत मुबारक रहे ज़ाहिदों को
कि मैं आप का सामना चाहता हूँ
Let the heaven be populated by devotees, godly persons!
I only want to see you face to face!!
ज़रा सा तो दिल हूँ मगर शोख़ इतना
वही लन तरानी सुना चाहता हूँ
I am just a small heart, but I am so naughty so impertinent!
I want to listen to that same boasting, bragging!!
कोई दम का मेहमाँ हूँ ऐ अहल-ए-महफ़िल
चराग़-ए-सहर हूँ बुझा चाहता हूँ
O people of the congregation, I am to live for a short time!
I am like the lamp at the dawn ,I want to be extinguished!!
भरी बज़्म में राज़ की बात कह दी
बड़ा बे-अदब हूँ सज़ा चाहता हूँ
I have disclosed the mystery in front of the huge congregation!
I am so very ill mannered and deserve to be punished!!
There is an interesting fact about a sher in this gazal. Freedom fighter Bhagat Singh quoted this sher in a letter to his younger brother Kultar ,on March 3rd , 1931 from jail! Actually he included four shers from different poets. This one he quoted from this ghazal.

Rahat Fateh Ali (born 09.12.1974- 48 years old) is a very popular gazal and quawwali singer from Pakistan, who has made the entire subcontinent his personal domain. He is very active in Indian film industry also. It appears that he got his break in Indian films, in 2003, from Pooja Bhatt, who, while visiting Pakistan, took a liking for his song ‘Mann ki lagan….’ and adapted it in her film Paap.
Dr Radhika Chopra is a regular presence in my blogs. She is a rare performer who excels in ‘ Raag based gayaki’. she has mastered Ghazal, Dadra and Thumri and developed a style of her own.
Mallika Pukhraj (Born 1912- died 04.02.2004 ) was born in a small village Mirpur located on the bank of river Akhnoor in Jammu. At the tender age of 9, she was admitted to the court of Raja Hari Singh, ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. Her famous ghazal ‘ Abhi to mein jawan hoon…… ’ made her a darling of the entire subcontinent.
Syed Asrar Shah ( born 20.04.1985- 37 years old) is a Pakistani singer, song writer, composer. Here it is the Sufi Darvesh philosphy, where the God is the beloved! Asrar is active on ‘Coke Studio’.
This is a beautiful thought provoking ghazal and all the artists here have given it their own touch. Hope you enjoy it.
8th July is the 13th birthday of my granddaughter Prashali. Happy birthday Prashali! Now you are a teenager!!
