POST 77: Shab Ke Rangee Nazaron Se Khelae Kiya

शब के रंगी नज़ारों से खेला किया

This is a favourite gazal of mine, which I have been singing now for more than 50 years but unfortunately I have no knowledge about Faraz, a local shayar of Jaipur. Sadly , he could not make a mark for himself.

It is a beautiful gazal depicting absolute devotion and total dependence on the beloved to the extent that he foregoes all that one can desire!

Important words:

तलातुम: Tempest, storm; जूनँ (जुनून): craze,mania,madness; चाके दामाँ गरेबाँ: chest bleeding from knife or sword cuts

This is to celebrate my 77th birthday, which was on 12th July. In my last blog, I had offered to go bold! Well I have!! Imagine me singing this gazal for bad or worse!!!

So here you go!!!

शब के रंगी नज़ारों से खेला किया

मै इन्ही चाँद तारों से खेला किया

I continued to play with the beautiful colourful sights of the night!

I continued to play with the stars , the moon and their magnificence!!

मंजिलों ने बहुत ही बुलाया मगर

दिल तेरी राह गुज़ारो से खेला किया

The destination where I needed to reach, kept on calling me!

Still I continued to sit on the road from where you were to pass!!

गुल ही गुल मेरी राहो में थे तो मगर!

दिल तेरी राह गुज़ारो से खेला किया

Flowers and many more flowers were spread on my way to destination!

Still my heart continued to play with the path to be taken by you!!

Note: Gul in Urdu shayari also means a woman while a kali is used to denote a young girl

मेरी आँखे तलातुम पर उलझी रहीं

और मेरा दिल किनारों से खेला किया!!

My eyes were glued to the growing tempest !

And still my heart kept on playing with the shore!!

कोई मेरे जूनँ को ना समझा फराज़

चाके दामाँ गरेबाँ से खेला किया

O Faraz, nobody could understand my madness, my passion!

I lacerated and bloodied my neck and chest and still kept on enjoying it!!

I can not even begin to hope that you enjoyed it but honestly it is a good gazal.

Today is the birthday of my cousin Atul. Happy birthday Atul!
