POST 78: Kabhi Aah Lab Pe Machal Gaee
This is a rare treat as the lyrics have been penned by none other than Ghulam Ali himself! Also since lyrics are his own , he is truly in his elements singing this lovely gazal.
Here is a different voice and style of singing for your pleasure.
Gayathri Asokan is basically a Malyalam singer, who has also mastered Hindustani classical music. She has been directing music for films and had composed music for ‘Art of living’ foundation that was released in 2006. Her ability to sing gazals and Hindi songs without any external accent is a gift indeed. In 2017 she stopped singing for films and now concentrates on gazals only.
Important words:
आह: sigh; अश्क: tears; खयाल ओ खाब : thought and dreams; बक़द्र इ शौक़ :with due respect to the fondness; आफ़ताब : Sun; महताब: moon; फना: disappear, also means dying; गिरफ्त इ ग़म : clutches of sorrow; हुदूद: limits of sorrow; बक़द्र इ शौक़ :with due consideration of fondness, hobby, pastime; हुदूद इ ग़म :limits of sorrow,grief
At times a sigh plays naughty, truant on my lips!
And at times tears spillover from the eye!!
These lamps are the manifestations of your pain!
They extinguish and rekindle!!
Despite my best intentions I could not set up assemblage of dreams and aspirations!
Alas! your one look of fondness changed all my decisions!!
She is in her elements, in images while at times in shade and at times in bright sunlight!
At times she is the brilliance of Sun while at times she moulds herself into the softness of moonlight!!
Those who disappeared, died in the sorrows of love, never suffered the travails of life!
Those who did not perish in their own grief, died of sorrow of others!!
Even she had a similar craze, a mania, as mine,
Then why this difference between the two of us?
I could never escape the custody of sorrow,
While she went beyond the limits of pain!

This is an attempt to add to your pleasures of life. We are at a stage in life, where the motto is : ‘To do only those things that give you pleasure’. So Ansa and I were away to Banglore to participate in the 80th birthday celebrations of our Pilani friend C.P Rangachar. Imagine we were 7 of us with spouses! Thoroughly enjoyed the stay and festivities! Oh what a gang!!
Take care!
