Post 82 : Sham-e-firaq aab na poonch aai aur aa kar tal gai
Faiz Ahmed Faiz ( Born 13.02.1911- Died 20.11.1984), was a Pakistani shayar and a multifaceted personality. He served in the Indian army from 1942 to 1946, rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Was awarded MBE , in 1945 New Year Honours list. He was a committed member of the Communist Party of Pakistan, which he had founded in 1947. On 9th March 1951, he was jailed and sentenced to death but was released after 4 years.
He wrote this gazal while he was in prison hospital in 1953!
Ghulam Ali does not need any introduction but sufficient to say that his vast collection of gazals is a priceless gift to all lovers of gazal.
Important words:
शाम-ए-फ़िराक़: evening of separation; बज़्म-ए-ख़याल: imagination of company, companionship; हिज्र: loneliness, separation; आख़िर-ए-शब:end of night, period before morning, सबा:pleasent wind blowing from the East.
Begum Akhtar is a regular in my blogs. I have written extensively about her and have nothing worthwhile to add.
Farida Khanam , the ‘Malika -e Ghazal’, now 93 has retired from singing but her vast collection of ghazals is a marvel and a source of so much pleasure.
Do not ask me about that evening of separation, it happened and somehow got deferred!
My poor heart did console itself and life seemed normal again !!
Thinking of your companionship, the glow of your beauty spread, erupted!
My pain became bearable and night of separation turned into dawn!!
Whenever I thought of you the morning became beautifully scented!
When I thought of pain inflicted by you, the night became a nightmare!!
On leaving the home, I had evaluated and cleared all the aspects of our affair!
Somehow when I was in your presence everything reversed completely!!
Oh you the companion traveller up to the end of night, Oh the benevolent one, where have I lost you?
Where has sweet pleasant wind of the East gone? Where has the morning slipped?
Abida Parveen has appeared in my blogs on many occasions. A Pakistani singer, specialising in Sufi music, she is the highest paid artist in Pakistan, and performs almost all over the World.
Tina Sani is a Pakistani gazal singer, who was born in Dhaka, East Pakistan. She stayed for a few early years in Kabul and then moved to Karachi. Graduated from Karachi American School and then pursued commercial arts. She received her training in classical music from Ustad Nizamuddin Khan of Delhi gharana. She was fortunate to receive special training in gazal singing from Ustad Mehdi Hasan. She received ‘Pride of Performance’ award from Government of Pakistan and ‘ Performance Recognition Award’ in 2011 from the President of India.
Ali Aftab Saeed( Born 28.08.1985) is a Pakistani singer, journalist and an analyst. He founded the band ‘Beygairat Brigade — shameless brigade’ in 2011 and was its lead vocalist. His singing is soulful and demands attention.
Like all other Faiz gazals, even this one is rather depressing, but has a charm of its own. If one listens to this gazal a number of times, it grows and grows on you.
I have been waiting for comments, appreciation or at least some recognition from you. May I have your indulgence?
