Gazab kiya tere wade pae aitbar kiya

Dagh Dahalvi (Born 25.05.1831 — died 17.03.1905) was a master! A gazal penned by legendary poet Dagh Dahalvi, whose given name was Nawab Mirza Khan. He was born and brought up in the Red Fort Delhi, where his mother was married to prince Mirza Muhammed Sultan, son of last emperor of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Unimaginable but still I reposed faith in your promise!
The whole night passed as though waiting for the doomsday!!
No way could I make that beloved of mine to have faith in me!
My faithfulness made me shamefaced, ashamed!!
On the night of meeting she made me laugh and laugh so much that I had tears in my eyes!
She consoled me so much that she made me restless!!
I hear that the killer (beloved) is sharpening her sword!
If true undoubtedly, it is an attack on me !!
She did not come although I pleaded endlessly but modestly ,
Even on the promised night of union I waited and waited!!
You were supposed to promise an eye to eye union with me!
What have you done that the whole world has become hopeful?
My heart does not have power to understand the consequences!
She promised and the heart reposed faith!!
Oh my poor heart be prepared to suffer as my opponents are saying!
When none of my strategies worked I have assumed patience!!
The restlessness that comes with the naughtiness of the beloved!
The whole night passed in loving the restless heart!!
I have expressed my hidden secrets every time she forgot it!
I have exposed my love for her by concealing it again and again!!
I was not one to be so lost in the beauty of the scene as to gain my senses!
But your intentional ignoring made me wiser!!
My grudging envious tongue always begged and called the name of God!
Even when my frenzied mind was under control of my madness, mania !!
Oh you the killer(beloved) in imagining your loving look!
I loved the knife by applying it to my neck again and again!!
Strange was the over crowding in your congregations!
Thousands of times I embraced my rivals!!
Please do not ask the reality of my heart, but I would just say!
Let her be as restless and miserable as she has made me !!
I came to my senses only when she learnt the art of torture, tyranny!
I curse my heart for it alerted me at a bad time!!
I regained some faith in the justice of God!
Largely because you believed part of my pleadings!!
She expressed her love so secretly but with such arrogance !
I very hesitantly managed to express it, even before the God !!
Who has made this show of splendour and beauty near my grave?
My heart cried out I have been made restless even in my grave !
Speak about things which even God can not do!
You have unleashed your tyranny, cruelty and made me feel honoured!!
Even the Sun of the doomsday will become a beauty spot!
Oh Daag, a beauty spot on that black face that has been exposed by the soul !!
Farida Khanam was born in 1929 in Kolkata. She is no longer active but her singing has created a huge fan following and has been crowned as ‘Mallika-e- gazal’ both in India and Pakistan.
Tahira Syed ( Born 1958) is a Pakistani singer who specialises in singing gazal and folk sings. She is the daughter of Mallika Pukhraj. She obtained the LLB degree and then joined M.A. in English but dropped out. She learnt voice modulation and raggi art of singing using the throat, from Ustad Nazar Hussain. I have included her here for her tonal quality.
Pratibha Singh Baghel is a constant in my blogs. Enjoy her style of singing!
What a sensitive depiction of helplessness of the lover! Yes it is a very very long gazal even after I removed some 10–12 shers but you can select those that interest you.
Please enjoy different singing styles of these esteemed singers.
