नज़र-नवाज़ नज़ारों में जी नहीं लगता
Shakeel Badaunvi ( 03.08.1916–20.04.1970) was a sensitive lyrist who went against the then existing trend of realism and glorification of downtrodden adopted the theme of romance in his gazal writing. Having moved to Bombay in 1944, he got his break with songs of film ‘dard’ in 1947. These proved to be very popular including the song ‘ afsana likh rahi hoon….’ sung by Uma Devi, TunTun!

Shanti Hiranand (Born 1933- died 10.04.2020, aged 87) was an Indian classical singer who was born in a Sindhi family at Lucknow. She studied at Bhatkhandae Music School and debuted on all India Radio at Lahore in 1947. Initially she trained under Ustad Aijaz Hissain Khan of Rampur. She trained under Begum Akhtar in singing of Thumri, Dadra and Gazals , from 1957 till death of Begum akhtar in 1974. She was totally dedicated to Begum Akhtar and even wrote a book ‘ Begum Akhtar: the story of my ammi’. She was awarded Padma Shri in 2007.
This gazal has been based on raag BAHAR.
Dr. Radhika Chopra has appeared in my blogs several times. Suffice it to say the music scene is richer because of her contribution to gazal singing.
नज़र-नवाज़ नज़ारों में जी नहीं लगता
वो क्या गए कि बहारों में जी नहीं लगता
Even vistas of scenic beauty provide me with no solace!
Since she has gone even spring season does not give any pleasure!!
शब-ए-फ़िराक़ को ऐ चाँद आ के चमका दे
नज़र उदास है तारों में जी नहीं लगता
O moon come and brighten up this night of separation!
The perspective is so sad that even stars do not brighten me up!!
ग़म-ए-हयात के मारे तो हम भी हैं लेकिन
ग़म-ए-हयात के मारों में जी नहीं लगता
Although I am a sufferer of sorrows of life!
Still there is no comfort in the company of sufferers !!
न पूछ मुझ से तिरे ग़म में क्या गुज़रती है
यही कहूँगा हज़ारों में जी नहीं लगता
Do not ask me how I cope with travails of sorrows inflicted by you?
Can only say that I feel so lonely even in the company of thousands!
कुछ इस क़दर है ग़म-ए-ज़िंदगी से दिल मायूस
ख़िज़ाँ गई तो बहारों में जी नहीं लगता
Oh my heart is so enormously dejected with sorrows of life!
Though the season of defoliation has passed still spring brings no pleasure!!
फ़साना-ए-शब-ए-ग़म ख़त्म होने वाला है
‘शकील’ चाँद सितारों में जी नहीं लगता
The fiction of nights of pains is about to end!
Shakeel, still the moon and stars do not bring any comfort!!
