POST 99: Dunia mein hoon dunia ka talabgar nahi hoon
दुनिया में हूँ दुनिया का तलबगार नहीं हू
This is the ninety-ninth blog, which is to appear on first of July while the hundreth blog will appear on 12th July, my 78th birthday. I propose to stop publishing blogs for some time unless I come across a really quality gazal.I am trying to print these 100 blogs in a book. It would have all the gazals sung by all these artists in a pen-drive. The back cover will be thick enough to accommodate the pen-drive. I am still working on the logistics and request each one of you to help me in publishing the book, in case you have some resource.
This is one of the better known gazals of Akbar Allahabadi ( born 16.11.1846- died 09.09.1921) whose given name was Syed Akbar Hussain. He was a renowned Urdu scholar who is known for his satirical compositions, especially those that poked fun at the neo rich and those aping the western culture. He was a self educated person, who qualified as a barrister. He retired as a judge of the sessions court. He was crowned ‘Khan Bahadur’.

Note: There is a small note wherein this sher had been written by Jawhar Lal Nehru, in his own handwriting!

K.L. Saigal ( Born 11.04.1904- died 18.01.1947) was the first superstar of the Indian film industry which at that time was centered in Calcutta.

I am part of this world but I am not desirous of its charms, beneficence!
I have passed through the market but am not a customer of its offerings!!
ज़िंदा हूँ मगर ज़ीस्त की लज़्ज़त नहीं बाक़ी
हर-चंद कि हूँ होश में हुश्यार नहीं हूँ
I am alive but do not have any pleasure, zest in life!
I am in my senses how-so-ever I am not the scheming or over clever type!!
इस ख़ाना-ए-हस्ती से गुज़र जाऊँगा बे-लौस
साया हूँ फ़क़त नक़्श-ब-दीवार नहीं हूँ
I will pass through this house of life, without any attachment!
Afterall I am just a shadow and not a painting or statue on a wall!!
अफ़्सुर्दा हूँ इबरत से दवा की नहीं हाजत
ग़म का मुझे ये ज़ोफ़ है बीमार नहीं हूँ
I am dejected owing to lessons learnt but am not in need of any medicine!
This weakness is because of depression but I am not sick or ill.
वो गुल हूँ ख़िज़ाँ ने जिसे बर्बाद किया है
उलझूँ किसी दामन से मैं वो ख़ार नहीं हूँ
I am that flower which wilted in the season of defoliation!
I am not that thorn which would entangle with any clothing!!
या रब मुझे महफ़ूज़ रख उस बुत के सितम से
मैं उस की इनायत का तलबगार नहीं हूँ
Oh God! please save me from the torture of that beloved!
I am not desirous of her favours!!
गो दावा-ए-तक़्वा नहीं दरगाह-ए-ख़ुदा में
बुत जिस से हों ख़ुश ऐसा गुनहगार नहीं हूँ
Although I do not claim to be devout in the presence of the God!
Still I am not such a sinner whose actions would please the beloved!!
Note :बुत means the beloved and also means a statue. Worship of idols is forbidden in Islam
अफ़्सुर्दगी ओ ज़ोफ़ की कुछ हद नहीं ‘अकबर’
काफ़िर के मुक़ाबिल में भी दीं- दार- नहीं हूँ
Oh Akbar! There is no limit to my depression, dejection owing to weakness!
Even I am as little a devout as the infidel, non-believer!!
30th June was the birthday of my elder son-in-law, Ashish married to Pallavi. It was a grand celebration with more than 20 people and everyone enjoyed it. Happy birthday Ashish!
