पोस्ट 95:Rone se aur ishq mein bebaak ho gaye
रोने से और इश्क़ में बेबाक हो गए
This is not a very popular gazal,although penned by the master craftsman Mirza Assadullah Baig Khan, known as Ghalib. In typical Ghalib style words used are rather difficult but the underlying idea is quite simple. He wrote poetry under the name Ghalib as also under the name Asad.
In real life also, if one has the courage to weep profusely, things become simple! In one of the gazals penned by Syed Ahmed Shah and sung by Mehdi Hasan, the same sentiment has been conveyed so very beautifully:
इक उम्र से हूँ लज़्ज़त-ए-गिरिया से भी महरूम;
ऐ राहत-ए-जाँ मुझको रुलाने के लिये आ !
Since ages, I have been deprived of the pleasure of weeping with abandon,
O giver of relief, come to make me weep uncontrollably.
Note:लज़्ज़त-ए-गिरिया literally means ecstasy of weeping. At times weeping uncontrollably can be exhilarating, pleasurable and cathartic

Lata Mangeshkar ( 28.09.1929- 06.02.2022) was accorded the highest civilian award of the Republic of India, ‘Bharat Ratna’, in the year 2001.Here she sings this non-filmi gazal,the music for which was composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
Important words:
बेबाक: bold, fearless; सर्फ़-ए-बहा-ए-मय: overflow of wine; आलात-ए-मय-कशी : wares or instruments of wine drinking,like goblets,carafe etc; रुस्वा-ए-दहर: humiliated in this world; नाला-ए-बुलबुल: grief or wailing of nightingale, वजूद: existence , being, personality; अहल-ए-शौक़: people of love, desire; ख़स-ओ-ख़ाशाक: sticks and sprigs; तग़ाफ़ुल: knowingly ignoring,especially by beloved; ना’श: dead body; ग़मनाक: full of grief, sadness.
Jagjit Singh ( 08.02.1941- died 10.10.2011) was born in Sri Ganganagar in pre-independence Bikaner State. Initially he trained under Pandit Chagan Lal and later under Ustad Jamal Khan of Malhar Gharana. He learnt Khayal singing, Dhrupad, Thumri and other aspects of Hindustani classical singing.
Radhika Chopra has appeared in my blogs so regularly that I have nothing to add to her biography. Suffice it to say that she transforms every gazal that she sings, as though it was penned for her to sing!
Padma Shri awardee Mrs Shanti Hiranand (1933- 10.04.2020) has appeared in my Post 92. She taught music at Triveni Kala Sangam Delhi, in her last decades.
रोने से और इश्क़ में बेबाक हो गए
धोए गए हम इतने कि बस पाक हो गए
I became fearless and bold once I started weeping !
Repeated washing, thrashing and being insulted again and again purged me to holy purity!!
सर्फ़-ए-बहा-ए-मय हुए आलात-ए-मय-कशी
थे ये ही दो हिसाब सो यूँ पाक हो गए
The utensils used for drinking and continuous flow of wine!
These were the only two concerns so these became holy!!
रुस्वा-ए-दहर गो हुए आवारगी से तुम
बारे तबीअतों के तो चालाक हो गए
You were humiliated repeatedly because of your loafing!
Owing to your temperament at last you became clever,cunning!!
कहता है कौन नाला-ए-बुलबुल को बे-असर
पर्दे में गुल के लाख जिगर चाक हो गए
Who says wailing of the nightingale is ineffective?
In the veil of the flower( gul is also used for a woman and kali for a girl) innumerable hearts have been broken to pieces!
पूछे है क्या वजूद ओ अदम अहल-ए-शौक़ का?
आप अपनी आग के ख़स-ओ-ख़ाशाक हो गए
Why are you asking the existence and non-existence of people of love?
In our own fire we act as sprigs and sticks to sustain this fire!
करने गए थे उस से तग़ाफ़ुल का हम गिला
की एक ही निगाह कि बस ख़ाक हो गए
Had gone to complain about her intentionally ignoring me!
In just one loving look, all my complaints vanished!!
इस रंग से उठाई कल उस ने ‘असद’ की ना’श
दुश्मन भी जिस को देख के ग़मनाक हो गए
O Asad, she lifted my dead body in such a delicate way !
Even my enemies became saddened!!
Meenal Jain ( born 14.06.1985 in Indore) is an accomplished singer, who trained to become an actor in the Suresh Wadekar’s acting institute but did not complete the course. She participated in the second session of the singing competition show ‘Indian Idol’ in 2006 and reached the final six stage. She has sung for movies, including ‘No one killed Jessica’ (2010); ‘Raanjhanaa’ (2013); ‘ Ai dil hai mushkil’ (2016) and some Marathi films. Here she sings this gazal with lot of refinment.
To me this gazal sends different messages but the underlying thread is helplessness of the lover!
This fortnight we celebrated the birthday of my niece Poonam on 27 and her husband Ashish on the 20th. Also it was the birthday of my niece Saloni on the 23rd.Happy birthday Ashish, Saloni and Poonam!
